Estimating Traffic Soundscape of a City by Bus Information System: in case of Seoul

In urban area, traffic noise is considered as one of the major pollutions along with the air pollution. It is reported that the heavy traffic noise may cause physical or psychological diseases. Traffic noise measurement need to be performed in real-time on-site. But, measuring a wide area's traffic noise requires a lot of facilities, time and efforts. Therefore, we suggest a method of estimating the traffic soundscape using bus traffic information. In this study, Seoul City Buses are used for an index of representing total traffic on the road. At the same time, selected street's field-measured Leq of the traffic noise is combined and analyzed with collected bus traffic data by adding weight factor for distance, and diminishing-factor for heavy traffic areas. Finally, we obtained linear fit equation representing a relationship between on-site measured noise level data and bus traffic information. By the equation, bus traffic data is converted to traffic noise soundscape on the map to express wide area's traffic noise intuitively.
